Whether you’re a seasoned pilot or just starting your journey into free flight, one of the most common questions you’ll face is: How long is this wing actually going to last?


Paragliders are incredible feats of engineering. They rely on lightweight ripstop nylon and highly calibrated lines to hold you thousands of feet in the air. But because they are ultimately made of fabric, they have a finite lifespan.

The Average Lifespan of a Paraglider

The lifespan of a paraglider is typically measured in flight hours rather than years. On average, a modern paraglider will last between 300 to 500 flight hours.


For the average weekend warrior flying 30 to 50 hours a year, a wing can easily last 6 to 10 years. However, for professional tandem pilots or instructors flying every day, a wing might burn out in just a season or two.


It’s not just about the hours in the air, though. Ground handling (kiting) often puts more wear and tear on a wing than actual flying because the fabric is repeatedly dragged across the ground and exposed to dust. 1. The Porosity Test

A paraglider relies on internal air pressure to stay inflated. When fabric gets old, its poly-coating wears off, making it permeable—meaning air leaks through the wing instead of holding the airfoil profile intact.


Technicians measure this using an instrument called a porosimeter (such as a JDC or Kretschmer porosimeter).

  • How it works: A suction cup clamps onto 3–5 sample zones along the top surface of the wing (usually right behind the leading edge). The machine measures how many seconds it takes for a fixed volume of air to pass through the fabric under pressure.

  • The Scale:

    • 200+ seconds: Like new.

    • 100–200 seconds: Good condition.

    • 50–100 seconds: Heavily used; needs frequent re-testing.

    • Under 50 seconds: Failed. The fabric is overstressed, leaks too much air, and the wing is no longer airworthy.


2. Line Trim and Laser Geometry Checks

Paraglider lines shrink or stretch over time depending on the material (Kevlar tends to shrink, while Dyneema stretches). Out-of-trim lines change the angle of attack, leading to deep stall tendencies, hard inflations, and sluggish turns. Inspection centers use laser measuring tools to ensure line lengths remain within the manufacturer's tight tolerances (often within 0–5 mm).


3. The Betts Tear Test

This test checks the physical strength of the ripstop nylon. A specialized spring needle punctures a small area of fabric and applies a specific pulling force (typically ~600 to 1000 grams). If the fabric tears easily under this load, it is prone to explosive canopy failure during a hard asymmetric collapse or dynamic maneuver.


Signs You Can Spot at Home

If you haven't taken your wing to a shop for an annual check yet, watch out for these warning signs on launch:

  • Difficult Inflations: The wing hangs back or feels "heavy" and slow to rise above your head.

  • Sluggish Handling: The glider feels unresponsive to brake inputs or feels like it is constantly on the verge of stalling.

  • Faded or "Crispy" Fabric Loss: The wing loses its smooth, waxy finish and feels rough, soft, or chalky to the touch.

How Often Should You Get Your Wing Checked?

Most glider manufacturers and free-flight organizations (like the DHV and USHPA) recommend a full professional inspection every 24 months or 100 flight hours, whichever comes first. However, optimal maintenance intervals depend on your flying frequency, environment, and the age of the glider.

  • New Wings (First 2 Years): Get your first trim check after 20–30 hours of flight time. Synthetic lines (especially Dyneema and Kevlar) experience the most shrinkage or stretching during their initial break-in period. After the initial trim check, stick to the standard 24-month or 100-hour schedule.

  • Older Wings (3+ Years or 200+ Hours): Increase inspection frequency to every 12 months or 50 flight hours. Older fabric degrades faster under UV exposure, and porosity can drop rapidly once degradation begins.

  • Immediate (Unscheduled) Inspections:

    • Water or Tree Landings: Saltwater corrodes coatings instantly, while freshwater causes line shrinkage. Branch snags can easily split internal cell ribs or weaken stitching.

    • SIV / Aerobatic Courses: High-G maneuvers (spiral dives, SATs, dynamic collapse recoveries) put heavy mechanical stress on line geometry and attachment loops.

    • Abnormal Flight Behavior: If your wing hesitates on launch, resists coming up over your head, or requires noticeable brake pressure to fly straight, take it for a trim check immediately before your next flight.

4 Pro Tips to Make Your Paraglider Last Longer

Taking care of your gear on the ground is the best way to keep it flying safely in the sky.

  • Pack it loose and dry: Never pack your wing tightly if it’s even slightly damp. If you land in dewy grass, drape the wing loosely in a dry, shaded room as soon as you get home.

  • Limit UV exposure on the ground: Don't leave your wing laying out in the sun while you wait for conditions to improve. If you aren't flying or actively kiting, pack it away in its concertina bag.

  • Keep it clean, but don't wash it: If your wing gets dirty, wipe it gently with a soft, damp cloth. Never use harsh detergents or chemical solvents, as they will strip the protective coatings right off the nylon.

  • Store it at room temperature: Avoid storing your paraglider in a hot car trunk or a damp garage. Extreme temperature fluctuations and high humidity will accelerate the degradation of the fabric.
